Wilton is a historic town, and was once the capital of Wiltunscire (part of the Kingdom of Wessex). Its abbey (no longer) was replaced with Wilton House and the building of Salisbury Cathedral mean that Wilton's religious significance declined. Carpet weaving has long been important to the town, which is home to the famous Wilton Carpet factory and this still exists today (although is now partly a shopping village). St Mary & St Nicholas parish church is built in a beautiful Italianate style, complete with campanile.
